Solutions along the biomethane supply chain

From treating raw biogas to the injection of the biomethane into the grid for the granting of incentives or for the production of liquefied natural gas (LNG), Pietro Fiorentini is able to autonomously create and mantain integrated, customised solutions that guarantee maximum system production output and comply with contractually agreed-upon performance levels. In addition to this, we are also involved in business model development and co-investment in production.

Our proposal is also enriched by remote supervision and control services, as well as solutions able to regulate the differences between injection and withdrawal within the network (BiRemiTM). This, in the eyes of customers, places us as the only interface along the entire supply chain.

An ever-growing set of solutions

Thanks to the FioGrade upgrading system with membrane permeation, pre-treated biogas is separated from CO2 and converted into biomethane with a separation efficiency of over 99.5%. With the injection of biomethane into the grid via the FioGrid system, renewable gas is sent for use in the transport sector. For this to occur, the biomethane must be processed in several steps: quality analysis, metering, compression, regulation and possible odorisation.

The advent of renewable gas requires distribution and transmission networks to regulate the differences between injection and withdrawal. BiRemi™ is the group of solutions created by Pietro Fiorentini to cater to these new requirements: automation, treatment and gas flows redirection systems, for a limitless gas network.

The biomethane solutions produced by Pietro Fiorentini are constantly growing across Italy and Europe, currently amounting to over 200 plants. This widespread presence attests to our success in the sector internationally.

Services for the maintenance of biomethane plants

The technological solutions that Pietro Fiorentini offers are supported by remote supervision and control services focused on predictive maintenance and data analysis. The proposed maintenance program enhances our service offer with inspections, metrological checks, operational maintenance and even plant management. This complete service allows us to ensure our clients have a single point of reference and, thanks to our widespread presence in the area, to guarantee a reduction in intervention times.

Pietro Fiorentini’s partnerships in the biogas sector

Since 2020, Pietro Fiorentini has been on the Board of Directors of the Italian Biogas Consortium, an industry association which includes the largest number of agricultural companies producing biogas and biomethane from renewable sources, industrial companies supplying plants, technologies and services, as well as bodies and institutions contributing to the promotion of anaerobic digestion for the agricultural sector. Our common goal is to promote the development and use of this renewable source and increase the synergies between the gas industry and the agricultural sector.

On the 28th of September 2022, the Biomethane Industrial Partnership (BIP) has been established. The association is promoted by the European Commission and will see the most important representatives of the biomethane industry committed to working together towards the energy transition process. Pietro Fiorentini is one of the twelve European companies selected as founding members. The most important target for BIP is to achieve the increase of the annual production and use of biomethane to 35 billion cubic metres by 2030. Reaching this target will mean replacing imported gas with homegrown, sustainable, and renewable gas, towards the development of a circular economy.

Successful projects

Waste treatment plants

In 2020, Pietro Fiorentini provided the integrated upgrading technology solution for one of the most important projects at European level for the production of biomethane from water purification sludge: the SMAT project.

The Castiglione Torinese plant provides for the recovery and treatment of biogas generated by the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge and consists of two complete biogas purification lines of 900 Nm3/h each, with the provision of a third line for a total potential of 2,700 Nm3/h.

Agricultural plants

May 2022 saw the inauguration of the new biogas upgrading and biomethane injection plant in Cella Dati, in the province of Cremona, entirely designed, manufactured and installed by the Pietro Fiorentini Group.

Completed in twelve months, the system injects into the natural gas distribution network the biomethane produced from livestock manure and plant biomasses cultivated in the adjacent area. The total volume exceeds 4 million cubic metres per year, the equivalent of the needs of almost 4,000 cars. Pietro Fiorentini’s biogas upgrading solution has a capacity of 1,000 Nm3/h from which more than 500 Sm3/h of biomethane is produced and injected into the grid.
